In an interview with magazine The Believer, Hanson speaks of her introduction to Benedikt Taschen in the early 1990s, and how she came to work for the publisher:

Whether you call them men's sophisticates, nudie books, or girly magazines, this long-ignored fine art form has a rich international history. Author Dian Hanson, a girly mag editor for 25 years, follows the development of the genre from 19th century France through the Jazz Historic period, two world wars, the chest-centric 1950s to the terminate of the swinging 60s.
